Preservation Over Mixing

Why true breed matters for livestock guardians.

One thing that should concern all of us who love Kuvasz and other livestock guardian breeds is how quickly true preservation is being overshadowed by random mixes marketed as “LGDs.” More and more puppies are being sold with little regard for heritage, structure, instinct, temperament, or long-term purpose. Many are mixes of multiple guardian breeds, and increasingly even crosses with herding breeds, retrievers, companion breeds, or doodle-type mixes. The result is often unpredictability rather than improvement. Livestock guardian dogs were not created by accident.

Breeds like the Kuvasz, Maremma, Great Pyrenees, Anatolian Shepherd, Caucasian Shepherd, and others represent generations upon generations of selection for specific traits, soundness, movement, judgment, independence, and working ability. How puppies are raised matters, absolutely, but genetics matter too. Instinct cannot simply be trained into any dog, and purpose-built structure and temperament are not things we should take for granted. The general public is increasingly unable to tell the difference between carefully preserved guardian breeds and random mixes being marketed under the same label. We do not have to agree on everything to work toward the same larger goal: preserving healthy, stable, purpose-bred livestock guardian dogs for future generations.
The Kuvasz has survived centuries because people valued and protected what made it distinct. The same is true for all authentic LGD breeds. Preservation is not elitism. It is stewardship.
